Room 13 - Learning Walls

  1. Hey there Room 13 whānau it is Kerri here. Your learning walls are INCREDIBLE! And to think we are only one week into the book! I love it.
A couple of questions - do you think creating visual references like you have with your board and your walls helps you to get more meaning from the story? I'd love someone to reply and explain HOW that works for you.
Also, I see you have an area for 'history' which is brilliant. What are your thoughts around learning parts of history through a story? Does it make it more interesting? Does it bring the history alive? Can someone explain this to me.

  2. Kia ora Kerri, it is Keira from Room 13 here. I have enjoyed working on the 'Word Walls' and exploring new language and new words. It helps me with my learning because I am finding the new vocabulary and then researching the meaning behind them. I also put each of the words into a sentence so that I can fully understand them. Having the word wall for me makes the story more meaningful because I can understand more about what is going on. It is also great to be able to go back to the wall to find words for my writing and to have it as a place I can go to. I wonder if other classes are using a 'Word Wall' to help them learn and understand the vocabulary they explore through our shared text. If any other classes are doing this it would be awesome if you could share what you do.

  3. Kia ora Kerri, it is Anuska and Lily here from Room 13 at Tamatea Intermediate. Yes, we both think it helps with our learning because we are interested in birds but didn't know too much about them so we asked if we could do some research into different birds from around NZ. We did this research and then asked Mrs Howard if we could create a display so that we can keep looking at it to help us remember the different birds and to help other people in our class to learn about them as well. We get to add anything to our #readaloud board that we are interested in which is cool because we all learn from each other. Have any other classes researched the birds that live in the forests of NZ if so please put a picture of what you have done in here.

    1. Hey! Thanks for your reply. I love that you are taking some ownership of the learning wall. This must be motivating to know that you can add anything interesting to it yourselves. Keep doing what you're doing:)

  4. Morena Kerri, it is AJ here from Room 13 at Tamatea Intermediate school. My thoughts around learning history through a story is that I really like it and that I get to learn about stuff that I never knew and about the past. It makes it more real and interesting when it comes from a story because it is easier to understand. I really wanted to learn about Pukutahi,Kati Mamoe, creatures of the forest and how they have developed over time, Pataupaiarehe and the legends behind them, the Fiordland area - tracks etc and the Maori names of the area and their meaning. I think that when I learn history through a book I want to eplore more stuff because I can learn about different ideas to look into. How many other people in our readaloud group are interested in New Zealand history?

    1. Hey AJ. It is good to hear that you enjoy learning about history through a story. I like this too! You have already found a heap of stuff to research - so good! You will be a busy inquirer as we read further into this book!

  5. Hello Kerri it is Hayley from Room 13 at Tamatea Intermediate here.

How having the board helps me in #Nzreadaloud.

It is amazing having the #NZreadaloud board because if you are not here one day you can see what happened in the book and you don’t feel like you are missing out on so much. It is a way you can take information from a book and put it where everyone can see it - like if someone comes in to our class they can see what we have been doing in #NZreadaloud - and this makes me feel proud. I like that we can also go back on things because it is recorded so if we need to do an inquiry into something else we have the ideas on the board. We can also get more information or spark some more ideas to help us with our new questions or wonderings. Please share what your classes way of recording information is with us in here.

    1. Hi Hayley. You have raised a really good point that I had not really thought about - that the learning walls are there to look at and catch up on if you have been away! I really love it when you say you are proud of your learning walls - this makes me so happy to hear. I think sometimes teachers think classrooms walls have to be of things students have 'completed' as opposed to learning that is continuous and built upon. Make sure you take some photos to update us on your walls so we can see how the walls 'grow'!

  6. Kia ora Kerri, it is Terry and Alfon here and we are from Room 13 at Tamatea Intermediate school. A good thing about the #NZreadaloud board is that we can look at it and see the stuff we have discussed along the way and we can conduct a research into different parts of it.
We can also put up some sketchnoting on there to help us remember what we have talked about during the reading of the text. Its a good thing because the vocab is up there so we can explore that further which helps us to learn. We like that all the information isn’t all over the place and that it is on one board. We like that we get to add our thinking and ideas to the board and that we can explore the different language features that we have talked about. The board also helps us to be inspired to do more inquires because all of the ideas that we have talked about are recorded there plus it is nice having it visual and that everyone can see it from anywhere in the classroom. It helps us to feel good about what we are learning and we can see what other people in our classroom are learning from the board which means they are helping us with our learning as well.

    1. Kia ora Terry and Alfon. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the learning walls. I can see that they really are a vital part of your literacy and it makes me happy to know that they inspire you and motivate you to research into things. Isn't it great that you can add things to the walls too - that they are as much your walls as the teacher's wall! I can totally understand that the walls make you feel good about your learning because when it is displayed in interesting ways, it makes you want to look!

  7. We think your learning walls are so cool! We are really inspired to use your idea in our own class and students have decided where this can go. We especially liked the native birds, how colourful the walls were, how you made the titles stand out, the Maori words and Mrs Moss loved the inquiry ideas. We are impressed with how much effort you have put into setting this up.
