After reading pages 9 -12, do you have any wonderings, questions, or opinions?
I did - could this be the 'real' Quintin McKinnon?

Welcome to Lara Moss and her class at Remarkables Primary School in Queenstown who are going to use the Blog to share your learning as we read the book.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kerri! We look forward to adding our comments and learning in here. Irirangi 3 students are really enjoying this story - so close to home for us and many students have been to the Sounds and our Year 8 school camp is to Deep Cove Where Nissa currently is in our story.
DeleteKia ora Kerri, good sleuthing - that is indeed the real Quintin! He went missing somewhere between Lake Te Anau and Milford Sound in 1892. That letter on page 12 is the actual/real letter sent to Dunedin from Te Anau after his disappearance.
ReplyDeleteKia ora Kerri and Sonya, it is Madz, Lucian and Hudson here from Tamatea Intermediate, Room 13. We did some research in to Quintin McKinnon, William Quill and Professor Mainwaring Brown who also went missing in Fiordland's in the 1800's. We found the letter that you used in the book during our research and another couple of clippings from the Otago Daily Times. We are really enjoying finding out about these people and think that it is interesting that they were mentioned in the book because they were actual people. We are enjoying finding out about people from our history and what they were interested in or did for jobs before going missing. It was also said that Quintin died from a presumed drowing, Mainwaring supposedily died due to an accident or storm and that nobody has ever found their bodies. We have found many photos and found where they camped. Finding out about historical figures and areas is so much fun and we wouldn't have found this out if it wasn't for #NZreadaloud. What have you other classes found out about our NZ history?
ReplyDeleteHi Room 13 it is Kerri again. Isn't it fantastic that through reading a book we can be inspired enough to go off and inquire into something that fascinates us! I am super glad that your teacher gives you time to do this. You have learnt some fascinating stuff about early NZ history in this Fiordland area.
